How the sharpening is done, step by step
Beyond the three main services — scissors, clipper blades and knives — the workshop also sharpens other bladed tools: axes, lawnmower and brushcutter blades, secateurs, loppers and hedge trimmer blades. If your tool has a blade and is not on the list, ask — most can be sharpened, some cannot, and you hear which before the work rather than after it.
Axes and splitting tools
An axe is ground on its original edge angle, evenly on both sides, and deliberately not to a razor edge: too fine an edge rolls on the first strike into wood. A supporting land is left to back the edge. Cooling is used throughout, since overheated steel softens for good. Before grinding the head is checked for cracks and for how it seats on the handle — a cracked head is replaced, not sharpened.
Bypass secateurs
This type has a single ground blade with one bevel, and a counter-blade the cutting blade passes. Only the outer bevel is ground, at the angle the maker gave the tool. The flat inner face stays flat: grind it and a gap opens between blade and counter-blade, so the shoot slides past instead of being cut — secateurs in that state cannot be rescued by further sharpening. The burr is therefore taken off by polishing, or with a pass so light it does not alter the plane.
Before grinding, the secateurs are stripped, sap and resin removed, and the pivot and spring checked. On reassembly the screw is set so the blades meet with light contact along the whole of the cut. Anvil secateurs are a different case: the blade is ground symmetrically on both sides and must land centrally on the anvil, or it crushes the shoot against the edge. The same goes for loppers: identical geometry, longer leverage.
Hedge trimmer blades
There are two bars and they work as a pair. Each tooth is ground on its top bevel, with the same amount taken off both bars, or the teeth stop meeting together and the tool breaks stems rather than cutting them. Bent teeth are straightened first, and the burr is removed from the underside so the bars do not bind. The clearance between the bars is checked last.
Lawnmower and brushcutter blades
A lawnmower blade is ground on its original bevel, from the top face only, and deliberately not to a razor edge: too fine an edge rolls on the first stone or kerb. A narrow land is left to support the edge. Cooling is used throughout: thin steel burns quickly and loses its hardness for good. Before grinding it is checked for cracks around the centre hole and on the lift — a cracked blade is replaced, not sharpened. After grinding it is balanced: the two ends are equalised in weight, since an unbalanced blade at working speed destroys the spindle bearing and the shaft.
On brushcutter blades the same amount is taken off every tooth so the blade stays balanced; a piece with a broken tooth or a crack is scrap.
The price and an indicative turnaround are set after assessment, since the range of tools and conditions runs from a freshly sharpened secateur to a pitted axe — write or call on +386 51 659 600 · igor.komadina@t-2.net.

Common questions
Which bladed tools do you actually take on?
The main services are scissors, clipper blades and knives; beyond those, axes, lawnmower and brushcutter blades and garden tools are sharpened too. Some blades — brazed carbide, toothed industrial blades, or tools that are past saving — are either not taken on or not in every case; whether a particular piece can be worked is confirmed from your description or after assessment.
Why must the flat side of a secateur blade never be ground?
On bypass secateurs only the outer bevel is ground; the flat inner face is the surface on which the blade passes the counter-blade. Grind that face and a gap opens between blade and counter-blade, so the shoot slides past instead of being cut. Only the outer bevel is worked, and the burr is taken off without creating a second bevel on the flat.
Why does a lawnmower blade have to be balanced after grinding?
If one end is heavier the blade oscillates at working speed. An unbalanced blade destroys the spindle bearing and the shaft, and that repair costs more than a new blade. The two ends are therefore equalised in weight before the blade goes back.
How should tools be prepared for drop-off or post?
Clean off soil and resin and wipe the tools dry. Wrap each piece separately and cover the cutting edge with stiff card or a rigid guard. Send secateurs assembled and closed, with their original screw. Drop it off at the workshop at Ferrarska ulica 14 in Koper, post it from Slovenia, Croatia and Italy, or arrange it with us.
