Starting price
13 €
per blade set
- Cutter and comb lapped flat as a pair, meeting evenly across the whole face
- Blade set reassembled and set, with the cutter teeth standing back from the comb tips
- Socket cleaned, spring tension checked, no hair packed between the faces
- A short note on tooth condition: what was restored and which set is heading for replacement
How the sharpening is done, step by step
A grooming salon’s day does not rest on one blade set; it rests on how many of them last to the end of the shift. A set that runs hot stops the work mid-dog, the animal feels the heat through its coat, and swapping blades costs time the diary does not have. Clipper blades are therefore sharpened as sets: cutter and comb have to work together on the clipper.
Assessment
The set is taken apart and cleaned; packed hair between the faces is a common cause on its own. Then the teeth of cutter and comb are examined, along with the tips, any corrosion or pitting on the mating faces, wear in the socket where the clipper’s blade drive engages, and the tension of the spring. That shows whether the job is sharpening, setting, or replacement.
Lapping the faces flat
Cutter and comb cut by riding against one another, so everything depends on how flat those faces are. Both are lapped flat, under steady pressure and with cooling. The face has to bear across its whole area, not only the outer edge: lap it unevenly and a gap is left between the parts, the work is thrown onto the tooth tips, and friction climbs. Only as much material is taken as an even face demands; every extra pass is remaining life removed.
Overheating is the one mistake that cannot be undone. A thin blade heats far faster than a kitchen knife, and burnt steel loses its hardness for good.
Teeth, and what cannot be saved
A rounded tooth tip is partly recovered when the face is lapped; a broken or bent tooth is not. A comb missing a tooth tears coat and can catch skin: writing that set off is more honest than sharpening it. The same goes for deeply pitted steel: corrosion below the face shows the moment the face is taken down.
Reassembly and setting
The set is rebuilt as a pair. The cutter is centred in its travel, the spring is set to a pressure at which the cutter beds without being forced, and the socket is aligned so the clipper’s blade drive seats fully into it. A drive that does not seat properly is a common reason for a freshly sharpened set that rattles and heats. The cutter teeth are left standing slightly back from the comb tips, otherwise the blade catches skin. The set is run and cut-tested before it goes back.
Price and turnaround
Starting price from EUR 13 per blade set, turnaround 1–3 working days, both confirmed after assessment. The workshop is not VAT-registered, so invoices carry the note: VAT is not charged pursuant to Article 94(1) of the Slovenian VAT Act (ZDDV-1) — the price is final, and VAT-registered buyers have no input VAT to deduct.
Blades are dropped off at Ferrarska ulica 14 in Koper, by arrangement, or posted from Slovenia, Croatia and Italy. Write or call on +386 51 659 600 · igor.komadina@t-2.net with the number of sets and which run hot.
Common questions
Can I send just the cutter without the comb?
No. Cutter and comb are lapped together and afterwards bed onto each other as a matched pair, so they can no longer be swapped about freely. Send the complete blade set, even when only one part looks worn.
Why does a blade run hot when I oil it regularly?
Oil is essential but it does not remove the cause. Heat almost always means geometry: the faces are not meeting across their whole area, the cutter is not travelling centrally, the spring is bearing too hard, or the teeth are blunt enough that cutting needs force. Each of those shows up during assessment.
What happens to a broken tooth?
A broken tooth cannot be put back. A comb with a missing or bent tip drags coat and can catch skin, so a set like that comes back unsharpened, with an explanation, rather than with an invoice for work that would change nothing.
How many times can a blade set be sharpened?
Every sharpening removes some material, so the number is finite, but there is no exact figure: it depends on the quality of the steel, the depth of any corrosion, and how coarsely the set was ground before. Assessment tells you where in that cycle your blades are.
How should clipper blades be sent by post?
Assembled, dry and free of hair, each set wrapped on its own, in a rigid cardboard box with filling on every side. Send tracked to Igor Komadina s.p., Ferrarska ulica 14, 6000 Koper.
